Description
Summary:Schuurman discusses Carl Philip Gottfried von Clausewitz's theory on war. The rich literature on war and warfare by Clausewitz's contemporaries and predecessors was of a predominantly prescriptive nature; these authors were interested in laying down practical guidelines for the achievement of military success. Clausewitz's On War formed a radical and original break with this tradition. He emphatically declared that he was not interested in the formulation of rules but 'only' in a thorough investigation of the most basic elements of warfare and the relations between these elements.
