Sequence comparisons and hybridization experiments show that ORFB sequences are conserved in other plant mitochondrial genomes. Nucleotide and amino acid sequence comparisons suggest that RNA editing is required in sunflower mitochondria to synthesize a functional COXIII polypeptide.
