Description
Summary:Fetal growth requires the correct balance of nutrients, oxygen, and growth factors operating under the direction of a genetic plan modified by maternal factors. The classic hormones of postnatal growth play differing roles with alternative controls compared to those after birth. The study of conditions of abnormal fetal growth illuminates the mechanism of normal fetal growth. It is now apparent that abnormal birth weight leads to long-term consequences.
