Description
Summary:This article is a synthesis of the research into the relationship between national identity and sport in Wales from the late nineteenth century until the present day. It explores how sport has been a central tenet in inventing, maintaining and projecting Welsh national identity within Britain. Sport has offered the people of Wales an evolving means of declaring their status as a distinct and equal constituent of the United Kingdom. Sport also illustrates how Wales is rooted deeply in a British popular culture. The sports involved in these processes are far more diverse than the popular conception of rugby union as the Welsh national game suggests. (Original abstract)
