Gonadotropins regulate tyrosine hydroxylase activity in Drosophila virilis
Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH, AN 1.14.16.2) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme in the major pathway of dopamine (DA) synthesis in Drosophila. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to the DA precursor dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). Earlier the authors showed that DA regulates the level of g...

Summary: | Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH, AN 1.14.16.2) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme in the major pathway of dopamine (DA) synthesis in Drosophila. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to the DA precursor dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). Earlier the authors showed that DA regulates the level of gonadotropinsjuvenile hormone (JH) and 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E)in female D. virilis andD. melanogaster. In young females, an increase in the level of DA results in an increase in the level of 20E and JH (degradation of the latter decreases). Gonadotropins, in turn, regulate the content of DA: an increase in the titer of JH and 20E in young Drosophila females caused a drop and increase, respectively, in the level of DA. The DA content can be regulated by gonadotropins during their synthesis, degradation, or control of the pool of precursors. One of the purposes of this study was to determine whether JH and 20E regulate the level of DA, changing the activity of TH. It was found that TH is a stress-response component in D. virilis and D. melanogaster |
