Summary:More than 75 kg of ferrous and nonferrous metals and about 60 kg of polyolefins are recovered by the process from one tonne of shredder residue. Based on data cited above8-10 the estimated energy savings per pound of metals recovered over getting these metals from ores to be about 116,000 kj/kg of metals or over 87 million kJ per tonne of shredder residue. Therefore, separation and recovery of the residual metals by itself from the shredder residue is an opportunity to save energy.
