Summary:An attempt has been made to study structural changes in partially reduced poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) using tributyl tin hydride (Bu 3SnH) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. XPS results indicate that the decrease in chlorine content and the presence of Sn(3d) photoelectron lines suggest the formation of tin compound on the surface during the reduction process. The microstructures of partially reduced polymer indicate the presence of racemic structures of r-dyads in addition to small amounts of branched structures. Thermal behaviour (DSC) of reduced samples supplement the observed changes.
