LESSONS FROM THE EVALUATION OF A PUBLIC OUT-PATIENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAMME IN THE WESTERN CAPE

Given the extent of alcohol and substance abuse in South Africa, there is an urgent need for effective, evidence-based interventions. This study reports on process evaluations of a public out-patient treatment programme in the Western Cape conducted over two years. A mainly qualitative methodology was used, involving individual interviews and focus group discussions with staff as well as clients and their families. The programme was generally viewed very positively by both staff and clients, and many of the concerns raised during the first evaluation had received attention a year later. The evaluations identified valuable lessons for enhancing public out-patient substance abuse programmes. Adapted from the source document.
