Summary: | Relationships of Criconema species characterised by the second annule not being narrower than the first, the postvulval region tapering regularly, and R>70 were investigated. This group of species has sometimes been assigned to the genus or subgenus Nothocriconemella. Cluster analysis of 46 populations representing the nominal species in the Criconema mutabile-group demonstrated that, except for C. undulatum, C. acuticaud-atum, C. alpinum, and C. graminicola (all described as new by Loof, Wouts, and Yeates in 1997), C. californicum, and possibly C. kovacsi, they all belong to the species C. mutabile. Comparison of ,15 collections and descriptions revealed problems in discriminating between C. sphagni and C. macilentum; a comprehensive analysis of additional populations is necessary to resolve their status. A key is given to the 14 recognised species of 'Nothocriconemella '. |
