Synthesis of substituted 2-mercaptobenzaldehydes and 2-substituted benzo[ b]thiophenes

Simple and rapid single-pot preparations of substituted 2-mercaptobenzaldehydes 5 and 2-substituted benzo[ b]thiophenes 3 based on ortho-lithiation methodology are described.
