Summary:In this paper, the elaboration of Al-Mn alloys by aluminothermic reduction of Mn2O3 powders obtained from anodes of alkaline batteries spent and aluminum beverage cans is studied. Variables analyzed were concentration of Mn (1-1.5%), and reduction treatment time (0-240 minutes). The experiments were performed at temperature (1073 K), stirring speed (200 rpm), and powders constant size (325 mesh). Results are discussed on the basis of the dissolution of Mn into the alloy, as a result reducing Mn2O3. The results obtained showed that the aluminothermic reduction method of powders of Mn2O3, is a good alternative for the elaboration of Al-Mn alloys.
