Comparing the methods in determining residual life on the basis of creep tests of low-alloy Cr-Mo-V cast steels operated beyond the design service life

Description
Summary:The method for assessing residual life and disposable residual life of the material of Cr-Mo-V low-alloy cast steel elements after long-term service under creep conditions is presented in the paper. The research included performing the tests, in literature referred to as the short-term creep tests, at the constant level of stress of the test corresponding to the operating one and, at the temperature higher than the preset design one, as well as the creep tests with and without the measurement of elongation during the test. The test results presented in the paper confirmed the possibility of applying the short-term creep tests and the tests with elongation measurement in order to determine the time of further safe service of the material of elements after long-term operation made of low-alloy Cr-Mo-V cast steel types. •The method for assessment of disposable residual life of the material of Cr-Mo-V low-alloy cast steel.•Abridged short and long-term creep tests with/without elongation measurement during test were carried out.•Practical use of abbreviated creep testing in evaluation of steam pipes component life was shown.
