Summary: | Mass balances were calculated from exchange between hydrogen and calcium ions. Reacidification rates were predicted for the limed lakes Bowland, Middle, Lohi and Hannah near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and for Sandy lake in Nova Scotia. Reacidification of a neutralized lake depended on the continuing dilution of dissolved calcium carbonate and, for a limited period of time, on the dissolution of calcite from the bottom. The model required data on initial lake pH after liming, annual average pH in the tributary, calcium concentrations in the tributary and after liming, amount of calcite in the bottom of the lake, fraction of the bottom covered by calcite, mean lake depth, lake volume and average residence time. |
