Summary: | Joseph A Englehard and Alfred A Price, editors of the Wilmington Daily Journal, joined the campaign of the Conservative Union party, to unite the state's white men against the 1868 Reconstruction constitution, believing that ratification would mean the end of white men's republicanism. Emancipation destroyed slavery republicanism and change the social and political terrain of North Carolina. Conservatives asserted that society prescribed the roles of men and women according to innate differences between the sexes, declaring that white men governed both civil and domestic society. |
