Description
Summary:The Bulgarian National Cyclotron Centre at the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (INRNE-BAS), is going to be a new facility dedicated to production of medical radioisotopes and research in the corresponding fields. This work details the shielding requirements of the facility and the preliminary radiological studies that we have carried out. The activity concentration of the long-lived radioisotopes is also evaluated which provides a useful guideline for the decommissioning plan of the facility. For these purposes we have performed simulations with the Monte Carlo particle transport and interaction code FLUKA. •A new facility for medical isotope production and research at INRNE-BAS, Bulgaria.•Monte Carlo FLUKA simulations for dosimetry assessment and shielding validation.•The distribution of the prompt and residual radiation fields is obtained.•Proposed optimisation of the BgNCC shielding design.•The activity concentration of the main long-lived radioisotopes is evaluated.
