Description
Summary:ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to investigate the celebration of the Bolivian centennial held in Buenos Aires in August 1925, with special emphasis on the commemorative discourses and practices deployed by a group of Argentine and Bolivian intellectuals and politicians who took advantage of the occasion to reconstruct the independence deed, consolidate certain imaginaries about the nation and intervene in the struggles for regional hegemony. [...]the following pages will be aimed at examining, from the specific case selected here, some aspects of the process of construction and affirmation of national identities reactivated during the centennial period in Latin America, while also delving into the political meanings and strategic orientations that surrounded such commemorative events. The article concludes that, during the celebration, not only was the attempt to forge international alliances and/or consolidate positions of power in the region at stake, but also the ambitious and elusive attempt to build, consolidate and externalize an image of a modern and civilized nation.
