Description
Summary:Sodium gordaite (NaG - NaZn4(OH)6(SO4)Cl·6H2O) was synthesized under air and inert atmosphere and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and selected area electron diffraction spectra (SAED). Intercalated hydrated sodium cations from NaG were exchanged by calcium, potassium and lithium, presenting changes of basal distance from 13.03Å in NaG to, respectively, 16.1Å, 16.1 and 17.9Å (in the sample synthesized under air) and from 13.05Å in NaG to 17.8Å, 17.5 and 17.7Å (in the sample synthesized under inert atmosphere). In the samples synthesized under air, all compounds were co-intercalated with carbonate anions, especially those after the exchange reaction with Ca+2 and K+, while this contamination was almost completely removed when the NaG synthesis was performed under inert atmosphere. •Sodium gordaite was synthesized under air and inert atmosphere.•When the synthesis is performed under air carbonate anions are co-intercalated.•Hydrated sodium cations were exchanged by lithium, calcium and potassium.•The basal distance changed with the exchange reaction and synthesis conditions.
