Description
Summary:An abstract of a study by Dumas and Terrell exploring barriers and unmet needs relating to medical and social support as perceived by teen mothers living in a city with a high prevalence of teen parenting is presented. Focus group data revealed that teen mothers rarely received any special prenatal care or referrals prior to giving birth, and had a general lack of knowledge about birth and parenting. The most notable challenges experienced were the unavailability of childcare and transportation, followed by a need for medical insurance for the mothers. Most reported difficulty obtaining medical care for themselves and their child, often due to scheduling problems, clinic hours, and wait times. The groups' suggestions for improving medical care and social supports for teen mothers and their children included the provision of services with: extended hours, child care, group sessions, breastfeeding assistance, parenting classes, and support from former teen parents.
