Crystal growth and optical spectroscopic properties of Ce3+/Dy3+ co-doped CaYAlO4 crystal for yellow laser emission

Summary: | Nowadays, yellow laser has been attractive worldwide since its various applications. Dysprosium (Dy3+) is one of the most suitable lanthanide ions for directly producing yellow laser emission, but it suffers from low cross-sections and cross-relaxation processes. Herein, the co-doped 0.5% Ce3+/1% Dy3+:CaYAlO4 (CYA) crystal with high optical quality was successfully grown using the Czochralski (Cz) method in a reducing H2/Ar atmosphere. Spectroscopic properties, including polarized absorption, emission cross-sections, and lifetime, were characterized. Ce3+ co-dopant was used as a sensitizer to enhance the fluorescence properties of Dy3+.
•The growth of co-doped 0.5% Ce3+/1% Dy3+:CaYAlO4 (CYA) crystal with high quality free from colored centers.•A comprehensive study from crystal growth to optical spectroscopic properties.•A potential gain medium for generating yellow laser emission under UV-blue diode pumping owing to suitable optical transition wavelengths.•The improved absorption efficiency of Ce3+ as compared to Dy3+ at laser diode pumping wavelengths. |
