Description
Summary:An examination of the migration patterns of working-class Comorians sheds light on significant inequalities with respect to mobility, access to emigration and ability to transform geographic mobility into upward social mobility. Their educational and cultural achievements and their family's direct, practical knowledge of emigration set internal boundaries on this social group. This paper also shows how migration plays a significant role in the recomposition of working-class groups in the home country by enabling those with slightly more resources to elevate their individual and/or family social status, while leaving those in more precarious circumstances out of this process. Migration thus fosters both mobility and social reproduction within the working classes.
