Differential equation for tool wear

The wear topography of a cutting tool is considered in relation to the redistribution of the contact stress in frictional areas at the front and rear cutting surfaces. A differential equation is obtained for the tool wear. On that basis, the cutter shape is optimized so as to ensure uniform wear.
