Summary:The relationships between local indices at stations in the Russian sector and the planetary Ap and Kp indices and the potential to evaluate planetary indices based on local values are studied. It is shown that the local indices of observatories in western Russian make it possible to estimate the values of the global indices rather well. Estimates of global indices based on data from the central and eastern stations of the Russian sector are less reliable, but this may be due to the lack of Kp -network observatories and stations in this sector, as well as underestimation of the global geomagnetic activity at 0900–1500 UT based the Kp index itself.
