Summary: | An efficient method that combines photochemical pretreatment and biological treatment with the Lentinus edodes fungal strain was developed for decolorization of kraft mill effluent. The strain removed 73% of color in Eucalyptus kraft E1 effluent in 5 d without the addition of other carbon sources. Pre-irradiation of effluent for 10 min in the presence of zinc oxide followed by biological treatment enhanced decolorization at 48 h. The combined treatment appears to be an effective decontamination option with no color specificity. |
