Summary:New Zealand has had an active programme in the exploration of microphysical processes involved in rainfall. This may be due in part to the ready availability of experimental targets in at least parts of the North Island and certainly the West Coast of the South Island. Initially, drop size measurements taken in Auckland were directed towards understanding the microphysical processes, including electrical effects, involved in the development of rainfall and lately, in support of weather radar work. The purpose of the paper is to place the New Zealand work in an international context.
