Summary:The article offers a definition, classification and describes the pathogenetic mechanisms of cognitive impairment in patients with arterial hypertension. The potential of different classes of antihypertensive drugs in the management of cognitive impairment and dementia prevention is discussed. The possible mechanisms of the improvement of cognitive functions during treatment with angiotensin II receptor blockers and calcium antagonists are considered.
