Description
Summary:At the local primary school Pete’s academic ability and love of reading were evident from an early age, and passing the 11-plus examination secured him a place at Ashton-under-Lyne Grammar School in 1959—the route to higher education and training for so many children of the industrial towns at that time. By this time Pete had decided on a career in general practice, and in February 1973 he had started a GP training rotation as a senior house officer in orthopaedic and accident and emergency surgery on the programme in Ayrshire, where he and Sheila embarked on married life in the typically cold and damp hospital married accommodation of the time. The rotation included a senior house officer post in obstetrics and registrar posts in respiratory medicine and infectious diseases at Ayrshire Central Hospital.
