Summary: | Old Testament perspectives on the definition of preaching The Old Testament antecedents to Christian preaching are considered briefly. It is found that the hymnic situation, that is the realisation of thanksgiving for salvation, in the Psalms comes closest to what is understood as preaching in the New Testament. The following amended definition of preaching is proposed for consideration: ‘A pneumatological word event in which a person who is a believer himself, leads people, via a communication experience with a text of Scripture, to an encounter with and a life before the living God. |
