Summary: | This paper aims to be a contribution to the analysis of the expression of linguistic politeness in Latin. As a continuation of a previous study (Unceta Gómez, 2010), I examine the responses given to gratitude expressions, an intrinsically polite speech act, in the comedies of Plautus and Terence, which form an optimal corpus for this kind of analysis. Given the limited number and the degree of elaboration of this kind of expressions, “thanks” responses can be considered in this corpus a markedly polite speech act, typical of the upper class. |
