Summary: | Although a small percentage of older women who came of age during the middle of the twentieth century served in the military, many married men who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Military service has been increasing among women in younger cohorts who came of age during the All-Volunteer Force (AVF) Era. Despite the importance of the military as an institutional influence on the life course, the military is a “hidden variable” in research on women’s lives. This presentation will: 1) document changes in women’s ties to the military across cohorts, 2) review what is known about how women’s direct and indirect connections to the military shapes their lives, 3) consider the limitations of extant data, and 4) explore potential avenues for future research. |
