Description
Summary:This synthesis reviews different methods for assessing soil erosion and sediment transport. Widely explored for several decades, these approaches allow predicting land losses and estimating risks associated with water erosion. However, these models contrast considerably regarding to the studied phenomena, their nature and their complexity in the field, and to the implemented approach, through the variety and the quality of used data, the spatial and temporal scales of application and the information obtained as output, types and uncertainties. An attempt to classify water erosion assessment models (129 models are considered) is presented based on their most critical geospatial attributes for water erosion modeling. They have been identified, explained and grouped into six categories: empirical, conceptual, physical, multi-criteria evaluation, statistical and machine learning. This work then describes the strengths and limitations of each category for documenting the processes nvolved in the mobilisation of materials, the development of erosion in different forms (sheet, rill or gully) and solid transport.
