Summary:Particular concerns for the veterinary profession are the role and authority of veterinary surgeons in protecting the welfare of animals used in scientific procedures, the composition and function of statutory institutional animal welfare committees, the role and function of Home Office Inspectors (the majority of whom are veterinary surgeons), and the organisation of the Home Office's inspection of establishments to assure compliance and encourage best practice.
