Inside, however, we find a collection of five surgical subjects: cancer of the esophagus and thyroid gland, carcinoid tumors, hyperthyroidism, and pancreatic infections. The author has had a substantial experience with these topics "which have received special study during the past 20 years."Writing from West Bengal, India, Dr Chatterjee has produced five well-referenced discussions, intending these chapters for "those studying for higher diplomas in surgery."Generally the discussions are thorough, comprehensive, and up-to-date. For example, the author devotes three pages to the carcinoid syndrome, discussing the classic midgut variety (diarrhea, flushing, wheezing, and right ventricular lesions) and the foregut variety (marked flushing, lacrimation, facial edema, and left ventricular lesions).
