Summary: | The benthic boundary layer approach to studies of sediment water current interactions in lakes is reviewed. In this approach the resuspension of bottom sediments was regarded as resulting from processes concentrated in a layer near the bottom. These processes were conventionally modelled using equations which ignored their variability in space and time. The effects of this were investigated in the case of Finnish lakes, particularly Paijanne lake. Time scales of hydrodynamic phenomena could be determined from relatively simple observations. Recommendations for measurements in Finnish lakes to ensure appropriate application of the benthic boundary layer approach are made. |
