A New Species and New Fossil Occurrences of Calcareous Nannoplankton in Eastern Mediterranean

A new species of calcareous nannoplankton, Gephyrocapsa florencia, occurs in late Pliocene and early Pleistocene core samples collected during DSDP Leg 42A, Site 376 in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Description
Summary:A new species of calcareous nannoplankton, Gephyrocapsa florencia, occurs in late Pliocene and early Pleistocene core samples collected during DSDP Leg 42A, Site 376 in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Four additional nannoplankton species (Corisphaera gracilis, Coronosphaera binodata, Homozygosphaera ponticulifera, and Syracosphaera lamina), heretofore known only from plankton samples, occur in these same cores. They are reported here from the fossil record for the first time. The limited occurrence ranges of these species suggest that they may be useful in recognizing previously defined Pliocene and Pleistocene nannoplankton zones.
