Description
Summary:Objectives: To compare the effect of tibolone and combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on plasma lipids in normo-and hypercholesterolemic postmenopausal women during a year period. Study Design: A total of 150 postmenopausal women were enrolled in this prospective randomized study. The women were first randomized into two groups receiving tibolone 2.5mg and conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) 0.625mg+continuous medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 2.5 mg respectively. Then each group was divided into two subgroups according to their baseline LDL and total cholesterol concentrations. Fasting blood samples were monitored at baseline and after 12 months. Results: Tibolone did not significantly reduce the LDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentration either in normocholesterolemic or in hypercholesterolemic women. On the other hand, CEE+MPA significantly reduced LDL and total cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemic postmenopausal women. Conclusion: This study represents the beneficial impact of CEE+MPA therapy on serum lipid levels of hypercholesterolemic women. However, Tibolone did not lower LDL and total cholesterol levels similar to CEE+MPA therapy. Further studies with long-term follow-up including the outcomes of hypercholesterolemic women will help to explain the exact effects of this treatment option.
