This talk will provide a brief overview demonstrating the capabilities of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and how it evolved in a typical research laboratory. When considering the integration of such a system the critical question that needs to be asked is: “Do we buy or build?” The answer needs to account for multiple factors such as specific need, whether or not in-house expertise is required, commercially available systems and most important, the cost. A short history of LIMS development will be provided as well as several resources for LIMS issues. |
