Summary: | Recent UN conferences aimed at combating poverty & promoting new forms of development have not represented an official UN opinion on these matters so much as a compilation of attitudes maintained by blocs of countries. Analysis of the UN Commission on the Status of Women's "Proposals for Consideration in the Preparation of a Draft Declaration and the Draft Platform for Action" (advanced unedited version, May 1995) shows that the Latin American bloc, like many others, insists that certain words or even whole paragraphs be bracketed or highlighted with quotation marks, indicating the tentative wording of a position with which they are not fully comfortable. In this light current problems are listed with the concepts of gender, sustainable development, equality, equity, family, human rights, reproductive rights, & education. M. Meeks |
