Summary: | We have probed the electronic structure of Bi sub(2)Sr sub(2)CaCu sub(2)O sub(8+ delta ) with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, observing changes in the electronic structure with doping variation. At carrier dopings below the optimal for superconductivity, we observe an excitation gap in the normal state. The momentum dependence and the magnitude of the gap are very similar to those of the d sub(x(2)-y(2)) gap observed in the superconducting state. |
