Description
Summary:The structure and mechanical properties of niobium and an alloy of Nb + 5.5-percent Ti were investigated at temperatures from 293 to 20 K. In preparing the vacuum-annealed samples, the annealing conditions were selected so that both materials had a fine-grained structure with a grain size no greater than 5-10 microns. The tensile and yield strength of both materials improved as the temperature was lowered, with the strength of the Ti-containing alloy higher at 293 K. At 20 K the niobium has the higher yield strength. Niobium was found to have satisfactory ductility and not to be susceptible to brittle fracture at low temperatures, while the addition of Ti increases the susceptibility to brittle fracture at low temperatures.
