Summary: | The grand show "Asia in Amserdam: The Culture of Luxury in the Golden Age," first shown at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, is reviewed. Its main focus is luxury products made in Asia that were imported and enjoyed by the wealth of Amsterdam during the 'Golden Age' of the seventeenth century. Objects were grouped by category, with a spectacular group of lacquered boxes and chests on exhibit; a group of Chinese porcelain pieces influenced by Dutch still-life compositional techniques was included, as were a group of textiles and a grouping of objects, paintings, and maps depicting botanical and xoological specimens from Asia. |
