Abstract David Gelber reviews "Fighting History: 250 years of British history painting," an exhibit currently at the Tate Britain until 13 September 2015. This survey presents an overview of British war art and history painting, with typical subjects juxtaposed with works of art chosen to represent "radical" responses to war at different points in the past three centuries. The exhibition captures a sense of the precedence that artists working at the pinnacle of British history painting gave to contemporary events over religious or classical themes.
