ABSTRACT IN FRENCH: Cet article appréhende les liens entre l'ethnologie et la gestion étatique des populations en Guyane de 1946 à nos jours. Dans une perspective socio-historique, il étudie la genèse des modes de catégorisations de ces différents groupes de « populations primitives » à « peuples autochtones » - et des dispositifs publics dédiés à ces groupes. Il met en évidence la transformation des figures de l'ethnologue engagé dans l'action publique: d'abord fonctionnaires chargés de la protection des « primitifs », puis soutiens militants de la cause autochtone et enfin experts. // ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: This paper examines the links between ethnology and state management of the peoples of French Guiana from 1946 to the present. It studies from a socio-historical perspective the origins of the varying categorisations of diverse groups - from `primitive populations' to `autochthonous populations' - and the public measures applied to them. It traces the transformation of the ethnologist working in the domain of public policy, from civil servant responsible for the protection of `primitive' peoples, to activist supporting the autochthon cause, and finally to expert.
