Summary: | Use of the white-rot fungus Phanerochaet chrysosporium to catalyze oxidative degradation of key pollutants from wastepaper de-inking was examined. Wastepapers (newsprint, writing, and printing papers) were inoculated with a P. chrysosporium culture under various conditions. Efforts to optimize process parameters revealed the best conditions for maximum de-inking for the different types of paper. Measurement of cellulose and lignin content indicate that the fungus does not have any effect on the cellulose. Hyphal growth during incubation was monitored using a scanning electron microscope. A starch-silicate complex must be used to compensate for a decrease in the mechanical properties of handsheets made from de-inked, recycled wastepaper. |
