Abstract This thesis explores the implementation of second generation open document hypermedia processing and presentation in the context of existing formal hypermedia models, including Hypermedia/Time-based structuring Language (HyTime) and the World Wide Web. HyTime's use within second generation hypermedia processing is analyzed and evaluated using existing models and established criteria. A sample application of HyTime is presented to provide an empirical evaluation of HyTime and to lay a foundation for other work in this thesis. HyTime document modeling and diagraming techniques are introduced that facilitate the authoring of documents, document sets, and applications. An analysis of the potential for automatically generating applications from HyTime document set code is presented to further facilitate this authoring process. Insights into the incorporation of multimedia scripts and HyTime documents are provided to promote the seamless integration of hypermedia components. Relationships between HyTime and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) are determined so that the two languages can be cooperatively used in a hypermedia environment.
