Abstract Spectra of silicon and boron compounds occur in stellar atmosphere spectra. Hence, laboratory studies of such spectra can yield information of the ease of production of these spectra and on relative transition probabilities. The BN triplet system, A3II - (X)3II, was emitted weakly in a microwave discharge in helium with traces of nitrogen and boron trichloride, and accompanied by a number of other diatomic spectra, including stronger bands of NH visible and BO α systems. Positions of B11N and B10N band heads were calculated for v' = 0 to 6 and v'' = 0 to 5. Two new B11N bands, (0,2) and (3,5), agreeing closely with calculated band positions, were recorded at 4026.9 A and 4105.5 A, respectively. Photoelectric intensity measurements in the BN triplet spectrum were found to be impossible, due to weakness of bands and overlap by other band systems. A survey of time-integrated combustion spectra form 3300 to 11,000 A, arising from a one-cylinder gasoline engine, revealed faint lines of Pb and C and one band of CH superimposed on a heavy continuum.
