Abstract This study provides a detailed analysis of the language used in coverage of the pandemic in The Guardian and El País, examining the representation of government positions and their influence on the public response. It examines the role of these newspapers as government communication channels and their effect on public perceptions during the health crisis. Through a rigorous analysis, we confirm our hypothesis that the governments of the United Kingdom and Spain exercised an ambivalent influence on the population through the strategic use of manipulative discourse. The study supports the creation of a bilingual corpus and the use of advanced text analysis to unravel the control and persuasion tactics applied. The findings reveal a tendency to use a negatively charged lexicon and emotional strategies, such as metaphors and technical jargon, to establish informational asymmetry between the authorities and the public.
