Summary: | The Etiology of seborrheic dermatitis remains unknown, although many factors, including hormonal, have been implicated. This chronic inflammatory disorder is generally confined to area of the head and trunk where sebaceous glands are most prominent. Although specific details remain unknown Pityrodporium Ovaleis strongly suspected to play a role in the manifestation of the seborrheic dermatitis.Gels have been employed in wide variety of products including skin and hair – care preparation. Clotrimazole is a broad spectrum antifungal agent used in the treatment of variety of fungal infections. Various antifungal agents are widely used in hair shampoos for the treatment of dandruff. These products show temporary effect for span of hours in a day on the scalp. Hence, an attempt has been made for formulation of clotrimazole Anti-dandruff hair gels which may give anti-dandruff action for number of hours.Hair gels were formulated employing clotrimazole and different gelling agents. The formulated gels were subjected to IR studies for confirming drug – gelling agents interactions. The IR studies confirmed the presences of interactions were observed with formulations (F1, F2, F3, and F4) and absence of any interactions with formulations (F5, F6, F7, and F8). The gel products formulated were evaluated for drug content, viscosity, pH, extrudability, homogeneity, spreadibility and drug release pattern through dialyzing method using prehydrated cellophane membrane. The formulation exhibiting good release was subjected to antifungal activity test using Pityrodporium Ovalestrain. Formulations (F7) exhibited good drug release profile and showed maximum zone of inhibition. Hence, it was subjected to stability studies for the period of three months and show negligible changes in consistency, viscosity, spreadibility and texture. |
