Abstract A Pre experimental study was conducted “to assess the effectiveness of music therapy in reducing the level of stress and anxiety regarding labor among antenatal mothers attending outpatient department in selected Hospitals of Udupi district, Karnataka” was done by Ms. Archana Nayakas a partial fulfillment of the requirement of the degree of Master of science in Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing at Canara College of Nursing, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, Bangalore.BackgroundPregnancy can be a difficult period presenting physiological and psychological changes for women. Women experience considerable stress when confronted with the emotional and physical changes that occur during pregnancy. Anxiety and stress are frequently interchangeable because anxiety is reflection of a particular stress dimension. Antenatal psychological disturbances have been shown to affect adversely, the wellbeing of the mother and fetus.Women with high antenatal anxiety and stress are likely to have premature babies as well as low birth weights. Prenatal maternal stress is shown to affect infant development and temperament negatively. When psychological problems arise during pregnancy, the safety of pharmacological treatment in terms of the risk to the fetus and the mother must be considered.As a therapeutic tool, soothing music with flowing, lyrical melody, simple harmony, soft tonal colour and easy rhythm can stimulate relaxation response during pregnancy. Music is a great way to lower heart rate of an agitated women because she can do it on her own and its very inexpensive. The choice of relaxing music lies with the woman concerned. Women will relax to the sound of classical music whereas other do best with listening to popular romantic songs. This form of therapy is becoming so popular that it is possible to buy CD’s that have been made for this purpose and they are easily available.ObjectivesThe objectives of the study were to:1. assess the level of stress regarding labour among antenatal mothers in selected hospitals of Udupi district.2. assess the level of anxiety regarding labour among antenatal mothers in selected hospitals of Udupi district.3. assess the effectiveness of music therapy in reducing the level of stress regarding labour among antenatal mothers.4. assess the effectiveness of music therapy in reducing the level of anxiety regarding labour among antenatal mothers.5. find out an association between stress and anxiety regarding labour among antenatal mothers with selected demographic variables.MethodA Pre experimental study was conducted among 50 antenatal mothers who were selected by using purposive sampling. The data was collected through a structured questionnaire for demographic proforma of antenatal mothers, Pregnant women labour specific anxiety scale and Pregnant women labour specific stress scale. The study was conducted in Government Hospital, Shri devi hospital, Adarsh Hospital and Chinmayee Hospital, Kundapur between 5th September 2012 to 30th September 2012. The data collected was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.ResultsIn the present study findings revealed that majority 29 (58%) of antenatal mothers were in age group of 23-26 years, majority 50 (100%) of the antenatal mothers were married, majority 28(56%) of the antenatal mothers were belonging to Hindu religion.
