Abstract The Influence of Emotional Intelligence Training on Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Students Emotional intelligence (EI) is a beneficial skill for nursing students when transitioning to the complex health care practice setting. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of EI training on EI scores of first-year pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing students. The study also identified which of the two branch abilities had the highest andlowest pretest and posttest scores. A quasi-experimental single group, pretest, and posttest study was conducted on two branches (Understanding and Managing Emotions) from the four-branch EI model. Twenty-seven participants completed a pretest and a posttest using a combined 37-item EI instrument specific for measuring the two constructs: The Situational Test of Emotional Understanding-Brief and the Situational Test of Emotional Management- Brief. The researcher measured the pretest scores before participants were asked to view four 15-minute video-recorded training sessions over 2weeks and use the abilities during the weekly assigned clinical day(s); then participants completed the posttest. The findings did not show a statistically significant difference between the pretest and the posttest scores. The posttest scores decreased in a short time between the EI training and the posttest. The study limitations included: recruitment ofparticipants from one baccalaureate nursing program in one geographic area of the United States and a small sample size, limiting generalizability to pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing students. In conclusion, the influence of EI training on EI scores are inconclusive and further research is needed to develop and sustain higher EI scores over time.
