Summary: | Electronic waste is currently the fastest growing waste stream in the world, posing a critical environmental threat. The poor disposability of electronics is especially an issue for the newly arising field of single-use devices, which show favorability in a variety of applications. Though impressive in terms of range of function and convenience, usage of conventional electronic components or power sources in these applications would inflict an immense surge in waste and cost, making them effectively impractical. Paper-based substrates exhibit superior compatibility with these one-use applications, offering a more affordable, readily available, flexible, and disposable alternative. Though beneficial in many aspects, there are persisting challenges impeding the widespread implementation of paper-based electronics and power sources, which are explored in Chapter 1. Chapters 2 and 3 highlight innovative solutions, successfully demonstrating both fully functional, tunable paper-integrated circuit components and a complementary, paper biobattery design. |
